Madhubani/Mithila Paintings

A set of three Madhubani paintings are the highlight of one of the walls in our dining room. Fishes are known to bring good luck and in each of these beautifully created Madhubani paintings the artist has shown 3 fishes.

Madhubani paintings or Mithila Paintings is a style of Indian painting, practiced in the Mithila region ofBihar state, India. The name comes from the village Madhubani.

Madhubani paintings are made without using brush or paint of any kind. The entire painting is made using the traditional nib pen and by applying flower and vegetable colors with careful strokes of matchsticks instead of brushes.

These paintings were traditionally done on freshly plastered mud wall of huts, but now it is also done on mediums such as cloth, hand made paper and canvas.

Contact ashokdipa@yahoo.co.in (This is the talented artist behind the paintings that we own) if you wish to know more about this art form and want to own one of his beautiful paintings.

Love Madhubani paintings - I like them for the rustic look they add to the decor. I have been planning to buy one since many years now esp their epic scenes. I did once sit down and sketch some Madhubani designs.

I want to buy one of the Jagannath ones next time. They use very vibrant colours in that one.

If you do get around to making one when you have time do share the pics with me :)
